Teacher Standard One:

Know your students and how they learn

1.5 Differentiate teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities

Throughout all professional placements I incorporated differentiation throughout teaching.

For example, throughout my final placement I was placed on an Early Stage 1 class. throughout observations I noticed I had a range of abilities. From students who would write multiple sentences, to students who couldn't write one sentence.

While I provided a scaffold for students who could not write, I extended the students who could write multiple sentences by asking them to think of two ideas and link them with 'and' to create a compound sentence.

See work examples below.

1.6 Strategies to support full participation of students with a disability

Completing my PEX2 on a Special Education class taught me how to engage students with a range of disabilities. This class was a K-6 class with eight students with different disabilities varying from physical disabilities such as a non-verbal wheelchair reliant student with Muscular Dystrophy, to emotional disabilities such as a student with autism.

I supported full participation by using different strategies such as, sign language, iPad speech applications and concrete materials. Students participated in cooking from a recipe. While doing this I ensured students were able to fully participate by strategically allocating tasks also, selecting recipes all students could consume and make.
